This 5-day tour of Charleston and the Low Country centers around the Patriots Point experience with two overnights on the USS Yorktown as well as a performance aboard the aircraft carrier. Students have the opportunity to participate in a performance workshop and to perform at the Citadel or a similar venue. Students explore the culture and history of Charleston with visits to the City Market and the Battery as well as Boone Hall Plantation, where the Gullah tradition comes alive through performance. A boat from Patriots Point takes students to Fort Sumter, the site of the first battle of the Civil War. An eco-tour by boat to Bulls Island includes a hike from the swamps to the beach with dolphin, alligator, and bird sightings. No trip to the Low Country would be complete without a taste of Frogmore Stew. Schools traveling from Memorial Day to the second week in June can revise their itinerary to take advantage of several performances as part of the Spoleto Festival.
